grid forming inverter, definition of
- Grid Forming Inverter
A grid-forming inverter is a new type of inverter that actively sets and regulates the grid's voltage and frequency, unlike traditional grid-following inverters which synchronize to an existing grid signal. This provides stability sufficient restart the grid after an outage (black start), and allows the support of microgrids or systems with high levels of inverter-based resources like solar and wind.
Grid forming inverters can operate independently to establish and maintain a stable grid, such as in a microgrid or during an islanded event.
